- We recognize that a well trained firefighter is a safer firefighter. As a result, we
have worked hard to provide training opportunities to all personnel in the department. We
encourage our firefighters to participate in Massachusetts Firefighting Academy training
courses and Massachusetts Fire Training council certification programs.
-
- Our perspective recruit firefighters are required to attend the Massachusetts Fire
District 7 Recruit Training Program. Spencer is in the North group. This recruit training
program consists of all aspects of basic firefighting based on NFPA 1001 and using
materials from IFSTA publications. All recruits must maintain a minimum average of 70% on
tests and quizzes.
-
- The culmination of the program is the administration of the Massachusetts Fire Training
Council Firefighter I/II certification. Recruits are required to successfully complete the
certification before responding to calls. As a result, these new firefighters have
acquired the basic firefighting skills to be productive and safe while operating as a
firefighter.
-
- We encourage our firefighters to participate in advanced training sessions such as
confined space and high angle classes.
-
- A number of our personnel have also achieved certification as Fire Instructors, Fire
Officers and Fire Inspectors which add to the depth of knowledge that is required by a
department to operate at a higher and safer level. As a result we are able to better serve
our customers and receive high marks in service delivery.
